Styrofoam Houses in Japan

Here’s a solution to our current sub-prime crisis: Styrofoam houses.

Japan Dome House Co., Ltd is a home manufacturer that creates igloo-shaped structure built from snap-together wall sections made of 100% expanded polystyrene foam (Styrofoam). The pieces are all prefabricated so it only takes about 2-3 people and a few hours to assemble it. The Aso Farm Land resort village in Kyushu uses about 480 styrofoam domes as lodging, recreational facilities and retail shops. The cost of a dome house will set you back approx. 3 million yen (under $30,000).

Otaku International’s site brought up an interesting factor: “not sure it might last in certain states where hurricanes and tornadoes are abundant.”  Ditto to that!

NIECEE’s TAKE AWAYS:

  • Cost Effective Resources. People are always looking into more cost effective resources, but are these houses environmentally safe?  It is made of Styrofoam.
