So my birthday was this past Sunday and each year I’m amazed how the number of phone calls and texts wishing me Happy Birthday decreases vs the rising number of birthday wishes I get on Social Networks (Myspace, Facebook, Twitter). I decided to come up with a list of five reasons why people prefer to wish you a Happy Birthday on Social Networks
5. Birthday Reminders. Thanks to those nice friendly birthday reminders you never have to remember a birthday date again and with the nice handy link by their name you can go and directly wish them a Happy Birthday
4. Its More Convenient. Instead of interrupting someone’s special day you can still send your wishes and they can view it at their own time.
3. Application Gifts. Since no one checks emails anymore and uses social networks to get their messages, this is a way to add that personal touch of sending a virtual gift.
2. The Feed. Most likely one of your friends saw someone else wish you a Happy Birthday on the feed, recognizes it, and immediately posts a comment too.
1. How Good of Friends Are You? You’d hope that you’re best friend or family would call you to wish you a Happy Birthday (although if my parents actually figured out social networking and did wish me a Happy Birthday via a comment, I’d be stoked because that tells me they know how to use social media!). Friends that you aren’t as close with or are acquaintances with you’re more likely to receive massive comments.
NIECEE’s TAKE AWAYS:
- It’s the Thought that Counts. Phone call, text message, birthday card, birthday gift, birthday comment, people singing to you on a street corner as you sit on the curb trying your hardest not to puke; it doesn’t matter how you do it, it’s the thought that counts. Over the weekend any birthday wishes I got made me feel special and that’s all I needed on my birthday.

I concur. Umm…puking on the side of the road? Publish that story

I agree it’s the thought that counts but I wonder if people in general would prefer to reach out via text/email/socnet vs. a simple call - I just read a study that stated texting is replacing talking in the teen set and the 3rd-most-cited reason for that is because “it helps them avoid verbal communication.” Oh dear!
“Teens say texting has advantages over talking because it offers more options, including multitasking, speed, the option to avoid verbal communication, and because it is fun - in that order, according to the study.”
