Are Collectibles Worth Buying in a Financial Bind

To the left is my collectible Insa Dunny to the right is the brand new limited edition Insa Heel Line that costs today £200 ($344.21).  A pair of these heels would be a great compliment to my dunny, but I’m going to have to pass.

I’m sure many Americans who collect certain items have had to say the same thing due to the financial bind we’re in.  I mean sure it’s a limited edition item and it would perfectly add to our collections, but of what value is that item that makes the purchase worth it?  There’s no standard answer, but many collectors these days are thinking long and hard about those values before making that purchase.  We are no longer living on impulse buys. We think long and hard about those purchases.

Even tonight as I was flipping through the channels on TV I came across Fox News’ Red Eye.  The subject headline was: “Un-Pimp My Ride: Mega Rich Cutting Back on Luxury Items,” sparked from an article & quote from Wall Street Journal: It’s not necessarily a good thing to show up at the tennis club with a new $30,000 crocodile handbag when your friends’ net worth has been halved…”

They probably won’t buy the $30k croc purse, but I’m sure they’ll justify spending $30k on something else that might be of more value because of their liquidity.

NIECEE’s TAKE AWAYS:

  • Value. The problem with limited editions is that it can be of a profitable value at one point in time and then be non-existent the very next day.  If you’re a collector know the value, whether it be monetary or sentimental.
