Our Breakfast Club at work meets every Friday. Not like something out of a John Hughes film but more like eat breakfast and socialize for half an hour. When I came in on Friday before I could even pick up a bagel the group said: “SORRY, only non-curling fans allowed!” In shock I of course said in a very assertive voice: “WHAT!?!?!?”

I should probably bring up the fact that last weekend I spent a total of 5-6 hours watching Women’s Curling. Specifically USA vs Great Britain and China vs Canada. These were both great sessions. On the Great Britain team you had Eve Muirhead as the skip (nineteen and a World Jr Curling Champion) & Jackie Lockhart a veteran athlete when it comes to curling as the third. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to beat the strong USA team’s accuracy.

In a tough session China vs Canada, Canada was defeated by a young team China who had only been training for only a few years and a little over a year with Montreal native Dan Rafael as their coach. Not even legendary skip Cheryl Bernard’s skills were enough though to beat China on their home turf. For China though, it meant gaining a little respect and a reputation for themselves in this sport.

So as I endured all the cheap jokes and silly impersonations of curling by co-workers, I took pride in my bagel and my new found sport and proceeded to explain why it’s going to be the new hot sport. No one took my side.

Bottom line: Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it!
