Pomegranate NS08: DNE but is a Smart Viral Campaign

I was almost fooled.  But as I reviewed the features on its site step by step it was becoming evident it Does Not Exist, and even more so with the “Coffee Brew” feature. Pomegranatephone.com is a microsite that promotes a cell phone that does it all: phone, email, internet, mp3, camera, Projector, Global Voice Translator, Coffee Brewer, Shaver, & Harmonica???

When I got to “Global Voice Translator” I thought Oooh cool new feature most phones don’t have! Then I got to “Coffee Brew” and then realized ok this is fake and instead of hitting “Keep Exploring” I went to “I’ve Seen Enough” and was surprised when a pop-up came saying, “Someday You’ll Be Able to Get Everything You Want in One Device” and then was re-directed to a site for Nova Scotia. I know what you’re thinking, “Uhh…Nova Scotia??”

Before you break out your Scandinavian-Palin-like accents, I must say this microsite for Nova Scotia’s “Come to Life” campaign is pricey, but interesting on whom they plan to target.  Messages of “Location, Opportunity, Help Wanted” stream across the top nav of the site along with testimonial videos from an Architect, Doctor, IT Project Manager/Surfer Girl that will make anyone want to move to Nova Scotia in these hard economic times.  Between catching the people who are social media, viral, tech savvy and leading them to a land of opportunity is a smart move.

The agency that created this campaign put a lot effort into creating this dual microsite. A good marketing effort was put forth with real pomegranates sent out into the streets of Boston, Toronto, Calgary, and Ottawa with the url attached to it hoping it would spread by word of mouth.  If it got to Twitter, looks like the job was done.

NIECEE’s TAKE AWAYS:

Getting the Job Done.  Some believe it could’ve been executed a little better with better testimonials and influencers who are targeted don’t have time for gag sites like these, but you’ll always have critics.  If the original goal is to spread the message virally then the job is done.

Viral is Push to Market.  Viral campaigns need a little push sometimes which is why social media played a giant role in it.  If you allow the viral rate to be achieved at an organic level it will take a good amount of time to see that return, but if you were to help put a little push without totally giving it away then the campaign will be in a good spot.
