Zombie Mob in Union Square

Something we rarely see here in Southern California are flash mobs. That Saturday morning of my weekend in San Francisco, my friends and I decided to take a walk back towards Union Square to do a little shopping after having one of the most awesome breakfasts I’ve had in my life.  Two words: Crawfish Beignets!

As I walked out of H&M, I saw this massive crowd making its way down Powell St.  Being the Twitter freak I am, busted out my Blackberry and ran to the crowd to Tweet about it.  Not knowing what it was or who they were, I shoved the camera to my boyfriend and said “Hurry! You get video coverage, I’ll get Twitpics” We ran towards the crowd and nearly got run over by a cable car. When we got closer, we noticed that they had gory looking makeup with fake blood all over them. They were walking around like zombies attacking the people on the street and on the cable car. Aha! I thought, another viral campaign.  Must look up! Ok, trusty Google guide me!

I came across Eatbrains.com and Laughingsquid.com.  Laughingsquid explained how the flash mob movement Zombie Walk started in Montreal in 2005, made its way towards Vancouver, Toronto, Australia, and now San Francisco.  Eatbrains.com is the official site for the Zombie Mob in SF.  They even have a Twitter account to keep all the Zombies posted on where they’re going to be.

An exciting 10-15 min and I’m glad I got to see it personally.

NIECEE’s TAKE AWAYS:

  • What’s up with LA?? I think LA may have dropped the ball on the whole mass movement.   Don’t get me wrong there have been some mass movements (Crimanimalz, Critical Mass) here in LA, but not the level that other metropolitan cities do it at. Well except for maybe the Immigration Marches that happened a couple of years ago, that was pretty kick ass seeing it over a freeway pass.
