My Pros & Cons for Watching 90210 Again

Today I caught an old episode of Beverly Hills 90210 on the Soap Channel. A few minutes into it I wondered how the new season of 90210 was doing especially since I caught a commercial a couple of weeks back of them revealing the father of Kelly’s son. So I decided to watch this particular episode and didn’t even bother watching the previous episodes to understand the whole storyline.
A few minutes into the episode I brought myself up to speed on who’s who thanks to those trusty “Last time on 90210..” previews. I already knew who the father of Kelly’s son is, but somehow I started to conjure up a list of pros & cons why I should keep watching the rest of this episode and this new generation of West Beverly High teens:
CON: A Mid-West Family Adjusting. Just like in the original BH 90210 where the Walshes moved from Minnesota to BH, the “Wilsons” moved to BH from Kansas and have a son and a daughter. Their daughter is Annie the girl next door you just love and could never hate, and Dixon the son who’s black, adopted, and fits right in…sometimes.
CON: Classic Cheesy TV Lines. You have to have lines like: “Do me this solid..” said by Dixon when he knocked off a side mirror off another car with his dad’s van . “My whole family is falling apart they’re PhotoShopping my sister in the family picture,” said by Naomi the typical BH girl whose parents are getting a divorce because her father is having an affair. Then the best hipster line: “I’m not like other girls, I like being different.” said by Kelly Taylor’s little sister Erin “Silver” who can sometimes be bitter and cynical due to her family’s history.
PRO: Can’t Get Enough of the Raised Eyebrows. It wouldn’t be a good soap/drama without the raised eyebrows of curiosity or raised eyebrows of envy and jealousy. There’s more eyebrow raises in this show than winks Palin gives in a debate!
CON: Down to Earth Factor. Dixon gets a job at the Peach Pit (it’s not a diner anymore it’s a hip new café) to pay for the damage of the mirror on his own so his parents don’t find out, while Annie is in a love triangle with two guys she likes but wants to be with the one that’s really going to care for her. Hmm..that sounds familiar.
PRO: Quirky Generation Plugs. I love the fact that Silver has her own blog. It’s so popular that Naomi had to have a serious discussion with her not to post about her father’s affair.
PRO: Love Triangles/Affairs. Lets face it, the reasons why we watch soaps and dramas is for the love triangles and affairs. Hello, Brenda, Kelly, and Dylan in the original series!
PRO: Bringing Back Original Characters. In the opening Brenda and Kelly were talking about Donna and her new baby, Kelly’s new love interest is trying to figure out who her son’s father is (it’s Dylan for course), and Nat was in it for like 5 secs when Dixon went to apply for the job at the Peach Pit.
Did I keep watching the rest of the episodes? Let’s see 4 pros to 3 cons, yeah I did, but more for the last three reasons. Will I be a fan of the show? I’m going to say No, but am interested to see what happens for the rest of the season.
What do you think of the new 90210 series? Are you a Fan?

NIECEE’S TAKEAWAYS:
- Extend the Shelf-Life. The Peach Pit is actually filmed at Kokomo Café in LA. Kokomo’s added a few 90210 dishes to the menu, but I think if the Peach Pit actually existed it would be a good marketing push for the show (i.e. 7-Eleven/Kwik-E Mart for The Simpsons Movie).
- Generation Call-Outs. In the next episode Annie was explaining to Silver how her mother had a sex talk with her and compared it to “An After School Special.” Silver had no clue what that was and Annie told Silver to “Google it.” WOW! :0
- Who’s Really Watching. I’m curious to see who’s really watching 90210. Sure the cast is dominantly these teens and normally we’d associate the audience to be teens, but that didn’t exactly work out for the OC. I wouldn’t be surprised though if the audience are previous BH 90210 fans looking to relive those good ol’ days since Brenda and Kelly are in the show.
